In this Spotlight article, we interview Tricia Boccard, who is currently the Treasurer for DC EcoWomen. Tricia shares what inspired her to join the Board, the environmental issues she is most passionate about, and her favorite green living tips.

What inspired you to join the Board?
While studying for my Master’s of Public Management at the University of Maryland, I learned about DC EcoWomen through a mentorship meeting with Alexandra Kroger (the former President of the DC EcoWomen Chapter). I enjoyed attending DC EcoWomen events, like the EcoHours, where I had the chance to learn more about a particular environmental career path and socialize with others. At the beginning of this year, I saw an opportunity to get more involved in DC EcoWomen by joining the Board.
Can you describe your work with the board? How can community members contribute to this work?
As Treasurer, I manage the annual budget and oversee all expenses, payments, and bank activity for DC EcoWomen. I work closely with the President and Vice Presidents on the Board to ensure that any costs incurred are reimbursed accurately and without delay. Prior to stepping into the Treasurer role, I served on the Programs Committee, where I planned social events – such as an art history tour and a boat tour of the Anacostia River. Community members can contribute to this work by attending our events and providing feedback on the events they’d like to see.
Which environmental issues are you most passionate about and why?
I am passionate about addressing environmental issues by thinking globally and acting locally. For much of my career, I worked in international disaster assistance and emergency management, where I saw how climate change has intensified environmental risks for communities around the world. I’m energized by work that makes science accessible to the public and to decision-makers, providing stakeholders with agency to better mitigate and manage risks.
What are your favorite green living tips?
I am a big advocate for composting! It’s a simple lifestyle change that helps us think more critically about our consumption and waste management. In addition to composting pick up services, I love that stores like Mom’s Organic and Whole Foods allow you to bring your compost. Many local governments now also have composting at their recycling centers.
What do you focus on in your day job?
I recently started as an Operations Coordinator at Climate Central, a nonprofit that communicates climate change science, effects, and solutions to the public and decision-makers. In my role, I support organizational operations - from event planning and communications to knowledge management, project management, and goal tracking.
What are your favorite things to do outside of work?
I love spending time with my family and friends – whether that’s watching a movie, going for a hike, or just hanging out! I also have a playful cat that brings me lots of joy.
Do you have any favorite books or films that focus on environmental issues?
Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer - it was on my list for a while, and I finally read it this year! I really enjoyed how Kimmerer poetically articulated ecological concepts.
How can people connect with you?
I look forward to connecting with folks via my DCEW email or LinkedIn!
